The History of Coffee in India

The History of Coffee in India

India first learned about coffee in the 17th century. An Indian Pilgrim by the name of Baba Budan smuggled back seven beans to India from Yemen in the year 1670 (which was illegal at that time) and planted them in the Chandragiri hills of Karnataka. The Dutch helped spread the cultivation of coffee in India as they occupied most of the country at that time, but commercial farming flourished with the arrival of the British Raj in India in the mid-nineteenth century.

Farmers were cultivating Arabica in the beginning but they had to switch to Robusta or Arabica hybrids later due to infestations of coffee leaf rust.

Location of Coffee

Most of the Indian coffee production is from coffee grown on small farms sized less than 10 hectares. The vast majority is still produced in the traditional growing regions in the southern states of Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, which account for roughly 90% of the country’s production.

India is renowned for its unique shade-grown coffee. The two commercially important species of coffee, Arabica, and Robusta, are grown under the heavy shade that is believed to contribute to the flavour of the coffee, along with other influences such as the monsoons, spices that grow around coffee, and the various fauna that thrive alongside it.

We certainly have come a long way from smuggling coffee to India to now being one of the largest exporters of coffee. There has been a dramatic increase in coffee consumption and coffee shops and cafes around the country too.
